Spawned in the bleak poverty of an East Anglian fishing port, Catesby is a spy with a big anti-establishment chip on his shoulder. He loves his country, but despises the class who run it. Loathed by the Americans and trusted by the Russians, Catesby is sent to Havana and Washington to make clandestine contacts. London has authorised Catesby to offer Moscow a secret deal to break the Cuban Missile Crisis deadlock. But before that can happen, Catesby meets the Midnight Swimmer who has a chilling message for Washington. Once again, the author poses the fundamental question that few spy novelists answer What is the greater crime? Betraying your country or betraying the person you love? A triangle of love and death that began in Berlin ends in Cuba. On one corner is a war disabled KGB general, on another corner is his unfulfilled wife. This sophisticated novel is full of twists and turns that merge historical fact with fiction. Sleaze and high politics literally share the same beds. A white-knuckle superpower standoff is played out against a backdrop of honey trap blackmail, Mafia contracts, assassination and Vatican scandal. The real blurs into the surreal as Che's car surfs on the Havana seafront and Fidel takes the pitcher's mound against a professional baseball team.
Midnight Swimmer Catesby Book 2 eBook Edward Wilson
This is his best book, I think.I have a theory about reading books by an author and it depends on the kind of books. In Wilson's case, given that each book is related to the others chronologically, I should have read them in order but I read them in order by when they arrived. I have already read The Whitehall Mandarin and await A Very British Ending as we speak. I think I have to redo these after I read AVBE.
They are complex novels and so much is going on. This is not my normal genre but I am hooked and The Midnight Swimmer is skilled...and deals with people in hard situations as all his books have. He probes the human experience.
Read them in order but regard his first book: A River in May, as a separate entity. That is based in some way(s) on his experience in Viet Nam and not part of the spy novels...directly.
FWIW: we knew each other as undergraduates over 50 years ago and just started exchanging emails. We haven't seen each other since then. I read so I am reading his books.

Midnight Swimmer Catesby Book 2 eBook Edward Wilson Reviews
Subtle, inventive and makes sense, right or wrong, of poorly understood history. I liked it a lot as it is filled with human fraility and passion.
My first exposure to Edward Wilson, and a pleasant experience it was. My cat became irratated by my lack of attention to her.
I can wittingly recomend this tome to all.
This is an excellently crafted book and meticulously researched. It is a novel but if only partly factual (and I believe it is based on the bibliography) it brings home to those of us who lived through the Cuban middle crisis how close we came to a nuclear holocaust. Excellent book.
The plot meandered for a while but eventually found a very interesting path. Nothing like historical fiction that seems true.
WOW! what a tale of Moscow, Washington, East Germany, London, Cuba, spies & back channel diplomats, UK Prime Minister, Che Guevara, Robert Kennedy. A political and spy thriller to make every conspiracy theorist ecstatic.
Edward Wilson has produced a great Cold War read. The story is fused with real events which makes it more interesting. It also provides a slant or a view on the times from pragmatic aspect which helps highlight the extreme views of the right. It provides some more ideas and thoughts on the Kennedy's and the people behind the assignations. As you read the story becomes more wrapped in the history of the time.
Set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis this makes for some very interesting reading. This espionage, cold war thriller has more of an international feel to it, more so than the previous novel featuring William Catesby.
This is the second in the series I've read by this author and it is also a well executed, delivered, intricate story line. You can easily get lost in these books following the paranoia, betrayals and the adage "keep your friends close and your enemies closer".
I'm very glad I was recommended this author - these books have been quite a find worthy of the 4.5 star rating.
